WFBA hosting county 911 director

FLINT TWP. — Spring Tremaine, director of Genesee County 911, will be the guest speaker at the West Flint Business Association monthly meeting, from noon to 1:15 p.m. Feb. 15 in the meeting room of the Golden Corral restaurant, 4200 Miller Road. Tremaine will talk about 911 behind the scenes and how it spends tax dollars and serves the community. Flint Township Supervisor Karyn Miller will give a brief update on township news. The Golden Corral is a new meeting location for the WFBA which has scheduled its monthly luncheon meetings there for the rest of this year, with the exception of June, July and August when the group goes on hiatus. Formed in 1989, the WFBA is made up of almost 100 members of the business, professional and civic community, primarily in the Flint Township area. It serves aa a public forum for issues affecting Flint Township. Meetings are open to the public and new members are welcome to join. — R.S.

Chamber to host DDA brainstorming session

FLINT TWP. — The Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce will host a Public Engagement forum on Feb. 21 at Genesee Valley Center mall to help the township’s Economic Development Corporation gather public input about projects for a proposed Downtown Development Authority, said Tracey Tucker, township economic enhancement director. The time for the meeting will be announced later. it is the second public engagement meeting being held seeking DDA projects. The first was hosted last month by the West Flint Business Association and generated several ideas. The EDC will meet at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the township hall, to discuss the DDA project and other developments. — R.S.

Police offering more seminars to teach churches self-protection

FLINT TWP. — Based on demand, the township Police Department has scheduled two more sessions of its “Responses to Violent Intruders in Places of Worship,” a two-hour seminar to train church people how to protect themselves. Two sessions previously held drew a good turnout, according to Police Chief George Sippert. The next two sessions are set for 6-8 p.m. on March 8 and 22 and will be held in the community room at the police station, 5200 Norko Drive. Interested participants are asked to pre-register by calling 810-600-3270, bring identification but no weapons and to arrive by 5:45 p.m. Presented by township officers who are certified instructors, the training is designed for clergy and others who are involved in maintaining church or building security. The training is being offered free of charge to places of worship located in Flint Township. Class size is limited to 45 people per session. — R.S.

Menoutes appointed to Planning Commission

FLINT TWP. — In a 6-1 vote, the township board approved the appointment of George Menoutes to fill a vacancy township Planning Commission. Menoutes is a former township trustee who served previously on the Planning Commission. the appointment is for one year. Trustee Barb Vert voted against the appointment, stating that there were other people interested in the position. — R.S.
