Old Newsboys and Flint Firebirds Raffle golf cart
GENESEE COUNTY — The Old Newsboys and the Flint Firebirds have teamed up to raffle off a Flint Firebirds Electronic Golf Cart.
Tickets are $5 each and all proceeds will benefit the Old Newsboys and the Flint Firebirds Foundation. The winner of the golf cart will be drawn at 8 p.m. on Aug. 30, at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center. The winner does not need to be present. Tickets can be purchased at the Flint Firebirds Team Store, 3501 Lapeer Rd, or at the Old Newsboys of Flint office. 6255 Taylor Drive. Raffle proceeds will help Old Newsboys continue its tradition of providing Christmas boxes for needy children in Genesee County. Students from 40 programs competed at 9th Annual Jobs for Graduates Career Conference
LANSING — Approximately 250 students from across the state joined more than 100 employers, community volunteers, and key stakeholders in Lansing on March 29 to compete in events at the 9th Annual Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates Career Development Conference (CDC). The CDC is a capstone of Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates’ (JMG) year-long programming, allowing students to demonstrate employability skills learned throughout the program. Volunteers from statewide judged employment-inspired competitive events, such as interviewing skills, problem solving, and public speaking, all aimed at preparing students for the workplace. Students from River Rouge High School, Starkweather Academy, and Hartford High School took home the day’s top honors.
The “Student Leader of the Year” Award went to DeAnthony Purnell of Flint and Natasha Rzanca of Marquette was named “Alumna of the Year.” Purnell is a current program leader, recognized for his over 33 hours of community service, attendance at all employer-led talent tours, leadership role in the classroom, and ability to maintain employment while participating in a number of student groups. Rzanca is a 2015 graduate of Gwinn High School and JMG alumna who has stayed closely connected to the program.
AAA Michigan – The Auto Club Group was honored as “Employer Champion of the Year.” Most recently, the company offered more than 100 JMG students with workplace mentoring opportunities.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit received the “Outstanding Partner of the Year” award for their commitment to supporting education, workforce, and mentoring programs for JMG youth.
Another local winner was Nolan Hensen (Flint Southwestern), second place in the interviewing competition. — R.S.
