McLaren Diabetes support group meets monthly

FLINT — McLaren’s Diabetes Support Group next monthly meeting is Jan. 11, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the McLaren Diabetes Education Program, G-3200 Beecher Rd., Flint in BeechHill Centre. The group is free and registration is not required

The support group meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month. A variety of topics are covered throughout the year. Details: Call 810-342-4110. — G.G. Sloan observes 75th anniversary of General Motors sit-down strike

FLINT — This week marks the 75th anniversary of the Sit-Down Strike. An exhibit dedicated to this important event is on permanent display at Sloan Museum. Everyone is welcome to discover what lead up to the strike, what was happening during those 44 days, and what the results were.

The exhibit tells the story of the struggles of the workers as well as what was happening in the offices of General Motors through videos, displays, and hands-on activities. Sloan Museum is open Monday-Friday 10-5 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 12-5 p.m. Adults are $6, seniors $5 and children ages 3-11 are $4.

FLINT — A Card Making Class to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held Jan. 10, 6 p.m. at Guiding Light Tabernacle, 6203 Richfield Rd. For $12 you will make four homemade cards to take home plus another card to give a cancer patient. Bring your own adhesive. Supplies must be ordered and prepared, so RSVP is required at 810-287-1835. — G.G. McLaren offering Nutrition Education Classes

FLINT — McLaren’s Diabetes Education Program is offering “Weight Loss: Controlling Your Weight through Diet and Exercise.” This series of four, one-hour classes will cover: healthy food choices/portion control; exercise; grocery shopping/label reading; and fast food/eating out. The classes also include handouts and participants are given a pedometer. The cost for the series of classes is $30.

These classes are being offered Monday mornings from 9-10 a.m., beginning Jan. 9 or Tuesday afternoons from 1-2 p.m. beginning Feb. 7, at the McLaren Diabetes Education Office, located at G-3200 Beecher Rd. in the Beech Hill Centre building. Registration is required.
