Straight Ahead jazz group performing at Genesee District Library

FLINT TWP. — Nothing says “summer” like the annual Straight-Ahead concert at Genesee District Library’s Headquarters branch,4195 W, Pasadena Avenue. The Grammy-nominated, Michigan-based jazz group will perform at 6 p.m. on June 12.

Straight Ahead is known for strong, inventive instrumentals and vocals, and is widely recognized for an eclectic and soulful approach to creating music. The group features the “Rhythm Sister” Marion Hayden on bass, Eileen Orr on piano, Gayelynn McKinney on drums and the dynamic Kymberli Wright on vocals.

“They cater to the older group of people as well as the young,” said Shirley Jones, Library Assistant. “Our patrons always ask when they are coming back.”

June events at the library

FLINT TWP. — The Flint Township-McCarty Library will present Exotic Zoo at 2 p.m. on June 9 — a hands-on animal program featuring a sloth, lemur, an anteater-looking animal and even a kangaroo. The McCarty Library also will hold a Noisemaker Workshop on June 30 at 1 p.m. Build your own musical instruments to take home while learning how vibrations cause sound. This program is led by an educator from the Sloan Museum. (Ages 4-12)

The Genesee Valley Center (GVC) Library will present Humor, Poetry & Music with Johnnie Jones at 3 p.m. on June 9. GDL’s Johnnie Jones will present a mixture of humor, nonsense poetry and silly music. (All ages welcome)

The GVC library will hold an eReader Drop-in Class on June 13 and 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. Get oneon one eReader help in using GDL’s digital library. (All ages welcome)

The GVC library will present Cameron Zvara’s Magic Show on June 30 at 2 p.m. This show is jampacked with magic, comedy, juggling, stunts, music and tons of audience participation. The Headquarters Library will present Cameron Zvara’s Magic Show at 2 p.m. on June 21. (All ages welcome)

The Headquarters Library will hold Lego Club for children at 2 p.m. on June 9, 16, 23 and 30. Bring your creativity to build and play with LEGOs. (All children welcome)

The Headquarters Library will hold Technology Tutoring from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on June 7, 14, 21 and 28. Bring in your own laptop, tablet, smartphone, Kindle, etc., or use library computers to learn new skills or troubleshoot old problems. No registration required. — R.S.

Save the date: Church car show and special service

FLINT TWP. — The annual God & Country Service & Car Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 2 at the Central Church of the Nazarene, 1261 W Bristol Road. Classic, exotic and sports vehicles will be displayed from 9 -11 a.m. before the service. Free coffee and donuts will be served. The service from 11 a.m. to noon will recognize first responders, veterans and armed service personnel. The car show will continue after the service from noon to 2 p.m. and will include free Koegel hot dogs and prizes. Details: Carl McElrath at 810-429-1703. — R.S.
