Hurley Food FARMacy expanding to help more people

FLINT — The Michigan Health Endowment Fund has awarded Hurley Medical

Center an $85,800 grant to expand its Food FARMacy to address food insecurity in

Genesee County. Launched in August 2017, Food FARMacy has provided immediate food assistance to over 700 people. In November, screenings and referrals for food assistance were offered in Hurley’s primary care clinics and all inpatient units. Between 35-53% of these patients were found to be food-insecure. This grant will allow the expansion of food insecurity screenings and referrals to community partners at: Hamilton Community Health Network, Genesee Community Health Center, Mott Children’s Health Center, Genesys Downtown Flint Health Center and Family Health Center, Wellness Services, Inc.

Patients with an urgent need will be offered “take home food bags” on discharge, to fill the time gap until they can fill their healthy food prescriptions. The Food FARMacy also helps patients in the long term by connecting them to other resources and/or partners in the community. The Michigan Health Endowment Fund works to improve the health and wellness of Michigan residents and reduce the cost of healthcare, with a special focus on children and seniors.
