Ladies of the Lights

FLINT TWP. — They were women before their time, taking on the romantic, yet dangerous and physically demanding job of tending to the beacons that protected the shoreline. Join Dianna Stampfler and get to know the women who excelled in this profession, from the 1840s until today, during the presentation Ladies of the Lights.

This discussion about female lighthouse keepers will be held at the Genesee Valley Center Public Library, 3293 Linden Rd., on March 23 at 2 p.m. — G.G.

Easter Egg hunt coming March 30

FLINT TWP. — Flint Township and Genesee Valley Center will host the Second Annual Flint Township Easter Egg Hunt March 30 at Flint Township Park, 5200 Norko Drive.

There will be four age categories for the Easter egg hunts, and all hunts will start at 10:30 a.m. This year there will be 10,000-12,000 eggs to find, and the Easter Bunny will arrive on a fire truck. Prizes will be awarded, with bicycles donated for the top prizes for a boy and girl in each category.

Last year’s event had approximately 450 attendees, 7,000 eggs and more than 200 prizes. — J.J.

Gleason Community Fund seeking organ donation essays

GENESEE COUNTY — The Gleason Community Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to organ donation, is accepting entries for its 2nd Annual Organ Donation Essay Contest.

Students across Genesee County in grade 12 who are planning to pursue a degree in medicine, preferably transplant medicine, are invited to submit an essay about the importance of organ donation.

Students are encouraged to write about how organ donation benefits patients world-wide and what more can be done to encourage people to become organ donors. The specific essay guidelines are outlined below:

1,500-2,000 words.

Must be a senior (grade 12) enrolled in a Genesee County high school. Entrants must be planning to pursue a career in the medical field, preferably in transplant medicine.

Essay must be typed or clearly hand-written.

The first-place winner will receive $1,500; second place will receive $750; and third place will receive $250.

The deadline to submit essays is April 19. A winner will be chosen May 1. Essays can be submitted electronically to gleasoncommunityfund@gmail.com. Contact Gary Gould at 810-452-2650 with any questions. — G.G.
