Book Club

FLINT TWP. — The Flint Township-McCarty Library, 2071 S. Graham Rd., will hold book club on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. This group will meet and discuss a wide variety of fiction that is selected monthly. The group is open to the public. — G.G.

West Flint Business Association seeking scholarship applicants

FLINT TWP. — The West Flint Business Association (WFBA) is offering scholarships to Genesee County students.

Scholarship are not primarily based on financial need and/or GPA. Awards are based on service to school and community. Applications from WFBA members and nonmembers are being sought for:

1.) The WFBA High School Community Service Scholarship is designed to assist high school seniors in achieving their goal of a college education. The purpose is to recognize individuals who demonstrate exceptional achievement and leadership skills through involvement in their respective school and community. Recipients must be attending a high school and perform community service. Although a cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required, it is only one factor in the determination of the winner.

2.) The WFBA Adult Learner Scholarship is designed for individuals currently in the work force and/or college who are trying to improve themselves by furthering their education while showing evidence of good citizenship, character and ability. Applicants must have at minimum a high school diploma or equivalent at the time of application and are not currently attending high school. If awarded a scholarship, the recipient must take a minimum of six (6) credit hours or nine (9) term hours per semester/term.

3.) The WFBA Trade/Vocational Education Scholarship is designed to assist an applicant who desires to continue their education in a trade/vocational post-secondary institution. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Scholarships are awarded in the sum of $1,500. Requirements: A completed WFBA scholarship, a current transcript (high school or college), two current letters of recommendation (no relatives), personal written summary of why you should be awarded the scholarship, proof of acceptance at a university, college or trade/vocational school, a copy of a valid Michigan Driver’s License or a State of Michigan Identification Card and the recipient must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Genesee County.

The WFBA Scholarship Committee will select the winners. Their decision will be final.

Finalists will be asked to have a personal interview with the selection committee. Winners will be asked to attend a WFBA luncheon meeting to receive their scholarship. Scholarships will be paid directly to the school in the recipient’s name. The money may be drawn on for academic purposes only. This means textbooks/fees or tuition only. If the finalist does not use all or any of the awarded funds for textbooks/fees or tuition, the money shall be returned to the WFBA.

Scholarship funds must be used in the 2020-2021 school year.
