In brief

Smith preliminary exam postponed

FLINT — A preliminary exam for Davison Board of Education member Matthew Smith has been postponed until Aug. 9.

Smith is charged with a misdemeanor count after allegedly making a threatening phone call to an elected official in the Upper Peninsula in March of 2020.

He was due in court Monday, but the prosecutor from Oakland County was unable to attend the proceeding so it was rescheduled for Aug. 9 in Flint 67th District Court.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton recused himself from the case because he knows Smith, so Oakland County will handle prosecution of the case after it was assigned there by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office. — G.G.
