2nd Annual Ride to Read & Motorcycle Blessing Event

FLINT TWP. — The Genesee County Literacy Coalition will host its second Annual Ride to Read and Bike Blessing Event on May 6. Registration and Blessing of bikes will be held from 2-3 p.m.. at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 Lennon Rd. (directly behind shopping center). Refreshments will be served. That will be followed by a 50-mile ride through Genesee County leaving at 3:30 p.m. and ending at Players Inn (810-653-6408), 3040 North State Road (M-15) in Davison.

The cost is $10 per person. All proceeds go to Genesee County Literacy Coalition to Help Adults Read by training tutors and getting them into the Genesee County Community. Drug and alcohol are prohibited. Details: Call: 810-919- 5078. Genesee County Literacy Coalition: 810- 239-9425. — R.S.

Calkins Road closure this weekend

FLINT TWP. — Calkins Road from Graham Road to Beecher Road was scheduled to be closed to through traffic for two weeks beginning April 18, according to a Genesee County Road Commission announcement. The closure is for pavement repair and removal of the right turn slip lane. Traffic will be detoured via Graham and Beecher Roads. Motorists are advised to allow additional time to reach their destinations. — R.S.

Police Chief gives a numbers update

FLINT TWP. — During the first two weeks of this month, township police officers responded to 963 calls for service,, said Police Chief George Sippert in a report at the township board meeting. Of those calls, 359 were residential and business checks, 358 were traffic stop, 126 were alarm, 53 were domestic violence and 71 were 9-1-1- hang-ups, he said. Also officers responded to 40 accidents and 20 motorists assists. — R.S.

Fire depts get big donation from health workers

FLINT TWP. —A check for $15,023 presented to the Flint Township Fire Department this week came from proceeds of a fundraiser by employees McLaren Health Plan on Beecher Road. The money was raised to help purchase safety equipment. Assistant Fire Chief Mike Burkley, in turn, presented to McLaren workers a framed certificate of appreciation. — R.S.

Craft /Bazaar and Bake Sale this weekend

SWARTZ CREEK — The Swartz Creek United Methodist Women are sponsoring a Craft/Bazaar and Bake Sale during the Chicken Barbeque on SAturday April 21 from 4-6 p.m. in the Family Life Center of the Church at 7400 Miller Rd. Items include little dresses, crocheted sweaters, art work, jewelry, knitted slippers, baby blankets and much more. Items adorable for showers and gifts. Chicken barbeque is $8 a person.
