MCC crowned champions in LEGO-Building competition

FLINT — A Mott Community College team of students won the Flint Institute of Arts’ (FIA) inaugural Intercollegiate College Town LEGO competition held in October.

The “Create a Masterpiece” LEGO event drew more than 700 people from across the region to Flint to see students from Mott Community College, Baker College, Kettering University and the University of Michigan-Flint compete to produce the best LEGO sculpture. MCC won the title with an abstract vision of downtown Flint. The students on MCC’s LEGO-building team were Nic Pentecost, Candis Cavanaugh, Cinthia Montague and John Dwight Durand II.

A collaboration between Baker College, Kettering University, Mott Community College and University of Michigan-Flint, each college was represented by a four- to five-member team with a mission to craft a piece of art from a collection of more than 90,000 LEGOs. Students had three hours to create their masterpiece and fellow students, as well as the general public, were invited to come watch them and cheer on the different college teams.

The FIA College Town program, initially launched in 2009, was created by the Flint Institute of Arts, in partnership with Baker, MCC, Kettering and UM-Flint, to encourage college students to participate in Flint’s cultural community activities and events. College Town membership also provides students from the four institutions with a free online membership to the FIA, offering free admission to all exhibitions and lectures, discounted admission to showings of feature films at the FIA, including special College Town film nights and discounts in The FIA Café.
