Powers Catholic breaks ground on new campus

FLINT — Tradition, history and pride took a giant step toward the future as Father Luke M. Powers High School broke ground on its new campus, June 10.

The Most Reverend Earl Boyea, Bishop of the Diocese of Lansing presided over the ground breaking and site blessing at 1505 West Court Street in Flint. Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, school administrators and community leaders also took part in the event.

According to Tom Furnas, Principal of Powers Catholic High School this ground breaking represents a deliberate plan to maintain a strong commitment to the City of Flint and the Genesee County community.

The new $21.5 million project, developed in partnership with Lurvey White Ventures, will occupy 130 acres on a shared campus with MSD. Powers’ facilities will include classrooms, a new arena-style gymnasium, a cafeteria, media center and an auditorium.

The campus will also include lacrosse, soccer and baseball fields.

Completion of the Powers site is expected in the fall of 2013. The new high school will have the capacity to accommodate 800 students. Currently there are 550 students at Powers. — G.G.

UM-Flint presents summer vocal camp

FLINT — For the 29th summer, the University of Michigan-Flint will present an intensive, two-week performing arts camp for area junior (grades 5-8) and senior (grades 9-12) students.

The Summer Vocal Academy of Music (SVAM) will take place July 9–20 for the Junior Academy and July 23–Aug. 3 for the Senior Academy, with classes held on the UM-Flint campus Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m. The registration fee is $155.

The Summer Vocal Academy provides a unique opportunity for middle- and high-school students to receive focused instruction in vocal music, as well as artistic and performance experiences that will enrich, expand, and compliment their skill sets. Trained instructors, including UM-Flint faculty, teach all courses, and students will perform a final concert at the end of each academy.

Classes offered include: Academy Choir (meeting twice a day); Men’s/Women’s Ensemble (Senior Academy); Dance and Movement; Vocal Techniques Class; Music Theory (Senior Academy); Art (Junior Academy); World Percussion (Junior Academy); Steel Drum and Percussion (Senior).

Stroll with nature at For-Mar

BURTON — There will be a nature stroll held at For-Mar Nature Preserve, 2142 N. Genesee Rd.,starting at the DeWaters Building, on June 16 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Meet at the Dewaters Building (off of Potter Rd.) for some fresh air and exercise during a stroll down a paved handicap and stroller accessible trail. Enjoy a small activity and snack for the kids after the hike.

Come to three out of the six summer strolls and get a For-Mar prize. For families, all ages. Cost: $3 per person. — G.G.
