WIFI installation nearing completion

FLINT TWP. — Installation of wireless connectivity (WIFI) at Carman-Ainsworth high school and middle school is expected to be completed by August 17, according to assistant superintendent Russ Parks, in a report to the school board last week. He said it is the district’s largest summer project. Weinstein Electric was contracted to install 41 access points and wiring at both schools. Backbone Inc. is handling the layout and equipment installation. — R.S.

Atlantis principal returns in the fall

FLINT TWP. — Wes Mayo, principal at Carman-Ainsworth’s Atlantis High School for the 2010-11 school year, has returned from deployment in Afghanistan, according to an administrative announcement last week. However, Mayo, who is an active duty Army Reservist, may not return to his post until late November or early December. Mayo may need surgery for a shoulder injury sustained while he was away.

Bart Zachrich, who has served as interim principal during Mayo’s absence has agreed to remain in the position until Mayo is ready to take over. Atlantis High School has relocated this year to the former Woodland Elementary school site on Beveridge Road. — R.S.

Township actively hiring on-call firefighters

FLINT TWP. — Now hring on-call fire fighters

The Charter Township of Flint Fire Service is now accepting applications for On-call Fire Fighters, according to a notice posted on the township’s web site at www.flinttownship.org. The dwindling number of on-call firefighters has become a concern in recent months between resignations and a general tapering off of people willing to work on an on-call basis, according to discussions at township board meeting.

Applications can be obtained online or At Fire Station #1 at 5331 Reuben Street, from 8 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and must be returned to Fire Station #1.

No fire service experience is necessary but is preferred. All successful candidates will be trained.

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Must be a United States Citizen

• Must live in or within 1 mile of Flint Township

• Must possess a High School Diploma or GED

• Must be minimum 18 years old

• Must possess a valid Michigan Drivers License

• Must possess a phone

• Must have reliable vehicle transportation

• Must be able to respond to emergency calls (when off work)

• Must be able to attend two trainings a month

• Must successfully complete a police background check, physical test, personal interview and medical review.

All qualified applicants will be notified by mail or phone text of the date, time, and place for testing.
