Twp. hall open late Friday to collect tax payments

FLINT TWP. — Normally closed on Fridays, the Flint Township Treasurer’s Office at the township hall will be open on Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to facilitate on-time payments of property taxes. After 5:30 p.m., payments can still be made in a designated drop box until midnight. Payments deposited in the box by midnight will be considered on-time. —R.S.

Board acknowledges fallen soldier

FLINT TWP. — A moment of silence was held at the township board meeting Monday night in honor of Army Pfc. Shane Cantu, 20, of Corunna, who died Aug. 28 in Afghanistan. He was a member of the U.S. Army, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. Cantu was a 2010 graduate of Corunna High School, where he was a three-year starter on the football team, according to a press release from the office of Gov. Rick Snyder, ordering flags to be flown at half staff on Monday in Cantu’s honor.

Funeral services for Cantu took place on Monday. — R.S.

Bikes will hit the bricks Saturday

FLINT TWP — A police-escorted motorcycle group ride will leave from Vehicle City Harley Davidson, on Austin Parkway at 11 a.m. Saturday as part of the 6th annual Bikes on the Bricks event. Registration for the ride will be held from 9-11a.m.

The pre-registration cost is $10 Rider and $5 passenger and $10 per person on the day of the ride. Riders will follow a 52-mile route around the county that is scheduled to end about 1 p.m. in downtown Flint where most BOB activities will take place.

FCP launches 84th season

FLINT TWP. — The award winning musical “Cabaret” opened Thursday The Flint Community Players was set to open its 84th season at 8 p.m. tonight, Sept. 13, with the award-winning musical “Cabaret.” The show is also FCP’s inaugural performance in its newly expanded and renovated Tom and Bea Nobles Performance Hall., 2462 S. Ballenger Hwy. (off Miller road behind the Kmart). Performances will continue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week and on Sept. 21-23. FCP also has announced that auditions for its next production “Bull in a Chine Shop’’ will be held on Monday and Tuesday, September 17 & 18 from 7-10 PM each evening. Auditions are held at the FCP performance hall. Readings will be supplied. FCP Director Steven J. Mokofsky is seeking six women ages 50-80, five men ages 25-40 and 1 woman age 25-40 for this Emmy Award-winning comedy-suspense thriller which first appeared on the Alfred Hitchcock television hour back in the early 1960s..— R.S.
