Juniors Taking Advantage of CAHS ACT Workshop
FLINT TWP.— Approximately 82 juniors at Carman-Ainsworth High School are participating in the 2nd annual ACT Prep workshop offered to prepare students for the State-mandated ACT in early March. These students will have the opportunity to take a retired ACT assessment twice prior to taking the real ACT. The workshop is designed for students to learn test-taking strategies along with improving specific content knowledge. The curriculum being used is designed by Cambridge Educational and is tailored to the needs of each student. All of these juniors took an ACT pre-test on Dec. 3, and received their results with an itemized analysis the following week. The analysis allows students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in each content area and helps their teachers plan appropriate lessons.
Does it help? Judging by last year’s results, yes it does, according to Superintendent Steve Tunnicliff. He reported at a recent board meeting that 47 percent of students who participated in last year’s program improved their ACT scores by two points or more and 29 percent of students improved by three or more points.
“The fact that they improved when it counted on the real ACT is not something to sneeze at,” Tunnicliff said.
For about half the students who took the workshop last year, the training was free. They paid a $75 fee up front to attend about 30 training sessions but got their money back if they attended 90 percent of the classes and did 90 percent of the work.
Similar classes offered by private companies can costs $300-500, Tunnicliff said. This is yet another example of how public school are helping students, he said.— R.S.
