Summer Food program looking to launch sites
FLINT — When school is out for summer vacation, millions of children across the nation lose access to the free and reduced-price meals they receive during the school year.
The Summer Food Service Program, run by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), aims to fill that gap, providing children with free, healthy meals during the summer months when school is not in session and when many children often face missing meals and lack of proper nutrition.
Last year, more than 21 million children received free and reduced-price meals during the school year, but only 2.3 million participated in the Summer Food Service Program.
This summer the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is planning to support 65 Summer Feeding sites across the Genesee, Saginaw and Bay County areas.
The sites will be open and free to children in need on various days and times based on individual site preference.
Approximately 42,000 children in these counties are at risk of hunger today. There are over 600,000 food insecure children in Michigan alone.
The Food Bank’s 2013 program runs from June 10-Aug. 23.
