Hurley receives $25,000 for diabetes education
FLINT — Hurley Medical Center has received a $25,000 grant from the March of Dimes to expand its Diabetes During Pregnancy Program — the only one of its kind in the area.
Through the program, women receive individualized, one-on-one assistance from both a Registered Nurse and a Registered Dietitian who are certified in diabetes education.
Patients learn how to monitor their blood glucose levels at home, how to inject insulin, and how to eat to control their diabetes and prevent the development of permanent diabetes later in life. They are also taught the importance of planning future pregnancies by making sure their blood glucose levels are in good control, prior to conception to decrease the likelihood of birth defects in unborn babies.
Demand for diabetes education among expectant mothers has doubled Hurley’s patient volume for the program.
“This grant will provide additional staffing to decrease the waiting period for the program, and enable Hurley to serve more women,” said Renay Gagleard, MSN, MHSA, RNBC, Women and Children’s Service Line Administrator at Hurley Medical Center.— G.G.
