Local 598 Soberfest event this Sunday
FLINT TWP. — The 19th Annual Soberfest Picnic promises good, clean fun for people of all ages at UAW Local 598’s Union City Ball Field, 4151 Torrey Road, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.
Soberfest is operated by Maintaining and Organizing Sobriety, a support group that is part of UAW Local 598, which represents employees at General Motors’ Flint Assembly. The event promotes having fun without alcohol and other drugs. Last year, more than 3,500 attended the event.
Attendees this year will get to watch pro style wrestling, fish in a trout pond, play horseshoes, compete in a softball tournament and participate in many other activities.
A feature of the event is a 5K Serenity Walk, which will raise money to purchase self help material related to alcohol and drug recovery. Registration is from 7:30-8:30 a.m. The walk starts at 9 a.m.
Organizers also plan to give away approximately 25 bicycles to youth who attend the event.
The event also offers students an opportunity to log volunteer hours for community service. For more information about event or to volunteer, please contact Bob McKamie, Jayne Atwell and Leonard Neely, Work/Family Representatives with UAW Local 598 at 810-236-6834. — R.S.
