Meet the Candidates Forum on July 30

FLINT TWP.— The public is invited to attend a Meet the Candidates Forum featuring the individuals campaigning for the Michigan 49th House District. The Genesee County Association of School Board Members (GCASBM) is hosting this event on July 30 at 7 p.m. It will be held at the GISD Davis Education Center located at 2413 West Maple Avenue. Several partner organizations have joined the GCASBM to hold a successful event, including: The Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce, League of Women Voters-Flint Area, Michigan Municipal League, University of Michigan-Flint, and the West Flint Business Association. The 49th District includes Flint Township, Swartz Creek, Flushing, Mt. Morris city and township and a small section of southwest Flint. There are eight candidates running – six Democrats and two Republicans. — R.S.

Genesee Valley Center to host school supply event

FLINT TWP.— Genesee Valley Center is “giving” Back to School a whole new meaning. As a collection site for the Stuff the Bus program, sponsored by local media in support of the Salvation Army, Genesee Valley Center will host a one-day, Giving Back to School event from 2-8 p.m. on July 31. This special event will include a Blood Drive in Center Court hosted by Michigan Blood.

Michigan Blood will donate $10 to the Stuff the Bus program for every donor who registers to donate during the Giving Back to School event. Interested donors can pre-register by calling 1-866-642-5663 or online at

CARS108 will broadcast live from the Outdoor Village from 5-7 p.m., to collect school supplies for the Stuff the Bus campaign. Requested items include: Backpack/Book Bags, Spiral Notebooks, Markers/Highlighters, Crayons/Colored Pencils, Pencil Pouches/Boxes, #2 Pencils, Boxes of Tissues (Kleenex), Large Pink Erasers, Black, Blue and/or Red Pens, Pocket Folders, Loose Leaf Filler Paper, Glue Sticks, Rulers, Scissors and Thumb Drives.

Anyone who donates blood or school supplies will receive a free pretzel coupon, while supplies last, redeemable at The Pretzel Peddler at Genesee Valley Center. Donors will also be entered to win one of ten $100 retailer gift cards. Blood donors will receive five entries and school supply donors will receive one entry for each of the items they donate from the list of requested items, maximum of 20 entries per person. No purchase necessary. Entrants must be a resident of Michigan, age 18 or older.

A Stuff the Bus Drop Box will be located at the mall July 26 – Aug. 18. School supplies can be dropped off at Customer Service in the JCPenney wing, Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m.- 7 p.m. or Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
