Literacy coalition to hold tutor training

GENESEE COUNTY — Some adults in the community could use assistance with their literacy skills.

Would you like to help an adult to read, learn English as a Second Language or finish the GED process?

Genesee County Literacy Coalition will be having a tutor training.

Training is held in two sessions, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The training will be held at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 Lennon Rd., Flint. Tutor requirements — finish both training sessions for tutor certification, High School Diploma or GED and provide two or more free hours of tutoring per week.

For training sessions, please bring brown bag lunch, beverages provided. $15 deposit for tutor book; one-year reimbursement if training has been completed (certified) and become a functioning tutor.

Art fair to be held in Fenton, Sept. 22

FENTON — Kiwanis Club in Fenton is holding the 35th annual Kiwanis Art Fair on Sept. 22. It will take place at Lake Fenton High School from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Admission is $3 and kids through high school are free. All proceeds will be used in Kiwanis service projects benefiting local children.

Unique original art will be for sale. There will be kids activities, entertainment, concessions and a raffle.

The general public will be voting on their favorite Art Prize entry and the winning artist will walk away with $1,000.

Eerie Experiments at Longway Planetarium

FLINT — Join Longway Planetarium’s staff of Halloween hooligans as they mix up some fizzing, color changing potions, make glow in the dark monster hands, and build an obnoxious sounding ghost caller.

This is happening Oct. 25, for families with kids ages 8 and up.

Times are 6-7 p.m. (program), 7 p.m. (pizza and pop), $12 per person or $40 for a family of 4 — includes pizza.

These fast-paced and fun hands-on activities and demonstrations are sure to get you in the Halloween spirit.
