Genesys Hospice seeks volunteers

GRAND BLANC — Training for new Genesys Hospice volunteers begins May 10 and runs through June 2. Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-9 p.m., at Genesys Administrative Services Building, located at 5445 Ali Drive in Grand Blanc.

The 24-hour training focuses on the hospice philosophy, developing listening skills, gaining awareness of feelings regarding death and dying, patient care, spiritual care and bereavement.

Volunteers who work at the Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich will provide companionship, feed patients, assist with activities at the center, perform clerical and computer duties, and help with fundraising events.

MCC among those presenting 2011 Ride and Drive, May 7

FLINT — The General Motors’ Supplier Diversity Council is providing a unique opportunity for the community to view and test drive more than 20 of the latest, top of the line GM vehicles at the 2011 Flint Ride and Drive.

The Flint Ride and Drive is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. May 7 at the City of Flint’s downtown surface lot, located on Saginaw Street between First and Kearsley Streets. Sponsored by General Motors’ Supplier Diversity Council, the Flint Ride and Drive is free and open to the public.

This family-friendly event includes complimentary food and refreshments; Safe Kids USA’s car seat review and check-up, sponsored by Hurley Medical Center and Health Plus of Michigan; McGruff Safer Seniors; Michigan Child Identification Program; live entertainment and a variety of activities for all ages.

Attendees will have an opportunity to take the featured vehicles — which include Chevrolets, Buicks, GMCs and Cadillacs — for a spin around downtown Flint, and will also have a chance to ask questions about the vehicles, without any pressure. The event also serves as a vehicle to recognize the contributions of minority suppliers to the community and local economy.

Flint-based Genesee Packaging, a prominent GM minority supplier, is hosting the Flint 2011 Ride and Drive event.

The 2011 Flint Ride and Drive is being supported by the following community partners: Accu Shape Die Cutting, American Red Cross, Baker College of Flint, Blackstone’s Pub and Grill, Citizens Bank, City of Flint, Financial Plus Federal Credit Union, Genesee Packaging Inc., Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce, Genesys Health Systems, Health Plus of Michigan, Hurley Medical Center, Koegel Meats, Mott Community College, On The Town Magazine, Safe Kids Greater Flint and the University of Michigan-Flint. — G.G.

Kidney cancer support to meet

FLINT — The Kidney Cancer Educational Support Group will meet May 11,1:30-3:30 p.m. at Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute, 302 Kensington Ave. The topic will be “What Services ACS Provides.”
