FLINT TWP. — Would you like to help an adult learn to read, learn English as a Second Language or finish the GED process? Genesee County Literacy Coalition will be having a tutor training. Training is held in two sessions — 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Sept. 27 and Oct. 5. The training will be held at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 Lennon Rd. Tutor Requirements: Finish both training sessions for tutor certification, High School Diploma or GED and provide two or more free hours of tutoring per week.
Lunch and beverages provided. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. $15 deposit for tutor book; 1-year reimbursement if training has been completed (certified) and become a functioning tutor. Fire department giving away smoke detectors
FLINT TWP. — The Flint Township Fire Department has received a grant to distribute a limited supply of smoke detectors and Carbon Monoxide detectors. One will be given to low and moderate residents living in a qualifying Community Development Block Grant area. Fire Chief John Ringwelski said about 20 of 129 available have been distributed. The department was able to obtain them at half price working with Home Depot, he said. They can be picked up at the fire department between 1-3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. A picture identification is required as proof of residency. A map of qualifying areas is posted on the township website. — R.S.
Get ready for fall cleaning
FLINT TWP. — A Household Hazardous Waste & Electronic Waste Collection Day, coordinated by the Household Hazardous Waste Consortium of Genesee County, is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sept. 27, at two designated collection sites.
One is at Goodrich Middle School, 7500 Gale Rd. and the other is at the Flint East – Water Service Center, 3310 East Court St. in Flint.
Items accepted include Household Pesticides, Herbicides, Fertilizers, Fluorescent Light Bulbs, Batteries, Gasoline, Aerosol Cans, Antifreeze, Mercury, Used Oil, Oil- Based Paint, Old Prescriptions, Paint Thinners, Tires (up to 7), Televisions, Cell phones, Computer Monitors, Laptops & Notebooks, Printers & Copiers, DVD & VCR Players, Fax Machines and Stereo Equipment.
Items not accepted include Commercial Waste, Explosive Material, Industrial Waste, Latex Paint, Medical Waste and Radioactive Material.
