Merkley Youth Charitable Trust makes gift to The Flint Diaper Bank
FLINT — A generous donation from the Merkley Youth Charitable Trust will help purchase thousands of diapers for children in need in Genesee County.
The trust, administered by FirstMerit Private Bank, awarded $2,000 to The Flint Diaper Bank. This is the first time the Merkley Youth Charitable Trust has made this gift, said Phil Shaltz, founder of The Flint Diaper Bank.
The Flint Diaper Bank, founded in 2013, supplied more than 1 million diapers in its first year. The diapers are distributed through the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to struggling families in Genesee County.
There is no government assistance available (including WIC or food stamps) to purchase diapers — even for the most impoverished families, although an adequate supply of diapers can cost $100 a month. More than 4,500 children under the age of 3 live in poverty in Genesee County.
