WFBA hearing weather report at monthly meeting

FLINT TWP. — John McMurray, president of Commercial Weather Services of Flint, will be the guest speaker at the West Flint Business Association monthly meeting, noon-1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Valley Family Restaurant on the southwest corner of Miller and Linden roads.

McMurray, a meteorologist, will talk about 50 year changes in weather forecasting techniques, overhyping weather, what’s new and what is tried and true. Flint Township Supervisor Karyn Miller also will give a brief update on local events. The meeting is open to the public. Reservations are not required and lunch can be purchased if desired. — R.S.

CAMS hosting Hurley Teen Health Check

MUNDY TWP. — Carman-Ainsworth Middle School will host a Hurley Teen Health Check Student Heart Screening Program, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. January 17 to look for signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) a serious heart condition that is the leading cause of death In young athletes. This free screening is offered by Hurley Children’s Hospital and the Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation. Thomas Smith was a Flushing High School student who died from HCM in 2011. Davenport U celebrates MLK Day on Jan. 19

FLINT TWP. — Davenport University, 4318 Miller Road, will honor Martin Luther King, Jr., with a service project making “Survival Bracelets” Jan. 19, from 1-4 p.m. Participants will make 400 survival bracelets to donate to active military personnel and first responders. Survival bracelets are used as a general purpose utility cord, they are made out of lightweight nylon rope constructed to hold up to 550 pounds. The inner strands of the cord can be removed and used for sewing, fishing line and other survival applications. Davenport University has partnered with local police, fire, military units and EMT departments to distribute the bracelets in Genesee County. Some bracelets will be donated to Operation Gratitude to be included in care packages sent to veterans, new recruits, first responders, wounded warriors and U. S. service members deployed overseas. — R.S.

Twp. board meeting change

FLINT TWP. — The township board regular meeting time has been moved to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 20. The township hall will be closed on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. — R.S.
