Help with literacy skills

GENESEE COUNTY — Some adults in the community could use assistance with their literacy skills. Would you like to help an adult to read, learn English as a Second Language or finish the GED process? Genesee County Literacy Coalition’s training is held in two sessions, must attend both sessions.

They are Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The training will be held at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 Lennon Road, Flint. Tutor Requirements: Finish both training sessions for tutor certification, High School Diploma or GED and provide 2 or more free hours of tutoring per week.

For training sessions, food will be beverages provided. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. $15 deposit for tutor book; 1 year reimbursement if training has been completed (certified) and become a functioning tutor.

Flint Arrowhead chorus to hold open house

BURTON — The Flint Arrowhead Barbershop Chorus will hold an “Open House”, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m., at the Courtland Center Mall 4190 E Court St., Suite 811.

“Men Who Love To Sing!” in the theme and the chorus invites the public to an evening of harmony, fellowship, good food and great fun. Come sing with them and enjoy the Barbershop experience.

Catholic Charities offers relief from the cold

FLINT — As mid-Michigan continues to endure frigid temperatures, Catholic Charities is providing help to those in need at its Center for Hope Warming Center and Soup Kitchen. Located at 517 E. Fifth Ave. in Flint, the Center for Hope Warming Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through March. In addition, Catholic Charities North End Soup Kitchen (located at 735 Stewart Ave., in Flint) is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over the next few days, to provide food and warmth for those seeking shelter from the elements.

Community members can do their part to provide relief from the weather by donating new and gently used hats, gloves, mittens, boots, and coats to Catholic Charities Community Closet. Men’s items and larger sizes are especially needed. Donations are accepted Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Center for Hope, 517 E. Fifth Ave., Flint.
