Rep. Kildee joins House Democratic Policy Committee

WASHINGTON D.C. — Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Steve Israel announced last week that Congressman Dan Kildee has been named to the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC), chaired by Israel.

The committee is charged with developing Caucus-wide messaging that forcefully communicates where House Democrats stand, resonates with hardworking Americans, and presents a sharp contrast to House Republicans’ special interest-first agenda.

Rep. Kildee’s role on the committee is specifically to manage day-to-day floor messaging and strategy for the DPCC. — R.S.

CAHS Poetry Out Loud competitor chosen

FLINT TWP. — Carman Ainsworth High School is participating in the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest. Presented in partnership with the Michigan Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, the competition is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. — R.S.

Baker College- Flint hosting financial aid workshops

GENESEE COUNTY — Baker College of Flint will hold financial aid presentations at area high schools for prospective college bound seniors. High school seniors and their parents or guardians are welcome to attend the event at their respective schools, whether or not they have identified their colleges of choice.

Presentations will be at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 3, at Powers Catholic High School and at 6 p.m. on Feb. 4, at Carman-Ainsworth High School, Representatives from Baker College of Flint will conduct the workshops, assisting students and parents with applying for federal and state financial aid. In addition, information about grants, scholarships and other types of assistance will be provided. — R.S.

Literacy training offered

FLINT TWP. — Would you like to help an adult to read, learn English as a Second Language or finish the GED process? Genesee County Literacy Coalition is holding two mandatory training sessions for tutor volunteers from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 and Feb. 14.

The training will be held at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 Lennon Road, Tutor Requirements: Finish both training sessions for tutor certification, High School Diploma or GED and provide 2 or more free hours of tutoring per week.
