Veterans grant awarded

GENESEE COUNTY — Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) has awarded a $15,000 grant to the Genesee County Department of Veterans Services to be used to hire an additional permanent fulltime accredited county veterans counselor, according to a press release. The MVAA created the County Incentive Grant program last year, with $250,000 to be dispersed to fund new county departments of veterans affairs, hire additional accredited county veteran counselors, or upgrade or invest in new technology. So far, $100,000 has been given in one-time grant funding. Genesee County was one of the first counties to receive a grant under this program. — R.S.

Audition Notice for “Theatre in our Parks”

FLINT — Open auditions are being held for the Kearsley Park Players 2015 “Theatre in our Parks” season. Productions this season will include Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”, the children’s theatre fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk” and the Gilbert & Sullivan comic musical “The Mikado.”

The season finishes with the classic Oscar Wilde comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest”. All productions will be directed by Kay Kelly.

Auditions will be held on April 13 and April 14 from 5-7 p.m. at the Flint Institute of Music, 1025 E. Kearsley Street in Flint.

Parts are available in each show for performers of all ages. Technical Crew is also needed. Those auditioning for the musical should prepare a song from “The Mikado”. “Theatre in our Parks” is presented by the Genesee County Parks Commission and the City of Flint Parks Department. Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” will be presented June 12-21; Children’s Theatre “Jack and the Beanstalk” will be presented July 9-12, the musical “The Mikado” will be presented August 12-23 and “The Importance of Being Earnest” will be presented September 24-27. Various productions will be staged at Kearsley Park, Linden County Park, ForMar Nature Preserve, Flushing County Parks with “The Mikado” and “The Importance of Being Earnest” being performed at the Colwell Opera House at Crossroads Village.

Children’s Museum opens bee-exhibit

FLINT — The Flint Children’s Museum, 1602 University Ave., is featuring a special bee-themed exhibit in the Discovery Zone, their rotating exhibit area dedicated to new visitor experiences. “A Bee’s Life” will explore flowers, the hive, honey production and more, immersing visitors in the fascinating world of bees.

General admission to the Museum is $6 per person.
