In brief

Expect traffic jams on eastbound I-69

FLINT TWP. — No tornadoes passed through the area Monday night but construction work on I-69 was a storm casualty.

A temporary retaining wall used to support the soil under the new lanes of westbound I-69 was washed out due to heavy rainfall, according to a press release from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

On Tuesday, MDOT crews closed the eastbound lanes of I-69 in the construction zone between M-54 (Dort Highway) and Center Road (Exit 139) for inspections.

Traffic was backed up on I-475 and on eastbound I-69 back to the Hammerberg Road exit.

The right lane of eastbound I-69 will remain closed while crews replace the temporary holding wall, shoring it up to limit pressure and reduce potential washouts in the future. Repairs are expected to take up to five days. Drivers can expect additional delays and are being advised to seek alternate routes. — R.S.
