WFBA to hear about economic development

FLINT TWP. — Janice Karcher, vice president of the Economic Development Action Group for the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the West Flint Business Association, from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21 at the Valley Family Restaurant, 5009 Miller Road at Linden Road. Karcher will talk about the impact of economic development efforts in Flint, development in Flint Township and west Flint, how our community is marketed and the effect of businesses brought into the county, Flint Township Supervisor Karyn Miller will provide a brief update on township news. — R.S.

Shredder truck coming Saturday to township hall

FLINT TWP. — One last chance to do some fall purging is coming up Saturday, October 17, which is the date set for the next Shred Day. Twice a year, township Clerk Kim Courts arranges for a paper shredder truck to visit the township hall for the purpose of securely shredding classified and confidential documents. The opportunity to use the shredding service is extended to residents who are allowed to bring two boxes full of documents to be shredded. The truck will be in the parking lot behind the township hall from 10 a.m. to noon that Saturday. The township hall is located at 1490 S. Dye Road. — R.S.

Firefighters to visit homes to install smoke detectors

FLINT TWP. — Assistant Fire Chief Mike Burkley announced that firefighters soon will be visiting homes in the area of Lavelle Road, north of Mackin, to install smoke detectors for residents who do not have them or to make sure they are functioning in home that do have them. The free service is funded by Community Development Block Grant funds to income eligible areas. The firefighters will be making the rounds from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday October 17 and will also be out at the same time on the following Saturday, October 24, if they still have any smoke detectors left. Burkley also issued a Fire Prevention Week reminder to all residents that this is the time of year to check that home smoke detectors are working and have fresh batteries. — R.S.

Trick or Treating hours set

FLINT TWP. — The township board has approved Halloween trick or treating hours this year from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. — R.S.

Senior pig roast coming soon

FLINT TWP. — The 4th annual Senior Citizen Pig Roast will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, October 24 at the Flint Township Senior Citizens Center, 2071 S. Graham Road. Only 100 tickets will be sold at $10 each.
