In brief

Boy Scouts popcorn drive

GENESEE COUNTY — The Boy Scouts Popcorn For Our Troops campaign encourages people to donate $30 to $50 so popcorn can be sent to men and women who are far from home and protecting our country. Donations can be made during the annual Trail’s End popcorn sale period, which runs through Oct.29. Started in 2007, the Popcorn For Our Troops initiative has netted more than 1.2 million donations, topping $32 million in popcorn — or 2,000 tons — being sent to American troops. During that same period, more than 2,900 donations were made in the Tall Pine Council, amounting to $79,000 in popcorn. In addition to the military donations, Scouts will continue to sell ready-made and microwave popcorn. Funds generated through the Trail’s End popcorn sale supports five programs including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Urban Scouting and Exploring, and supports Scouting opportunities to more than 6,500 young men and women in Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee Counties.
