Genesee County healthcare professionals eligible for student loan repayment

LANSING — Healthcare employers in Genesee County will be able to better recruit and retain medical, dental and mental health professionals through a special student loan repayment program offered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

MDHHS will select 10 to 15 primary care health care professionals who will be eligible for up to $50,000 tax-free to repay their educational debt if they practice for two years at approved sites in Genesee County and meet other program requirements.

Interested providers must mail completed application packages including application forms found on the Michigan State Loan Repayment Program website under “’Application Periods, Forms and Process.”

Eligible primary care providers include MDs, doctors of osteopathic medicine, doctors of dental surgery, doctors of medicine in dentistry, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse midwives practicing in an outpatient, notfor profit setting.

For this program, practice sites are not required to be located in health professional shortage areas or have such a designation, as is usually the case, and employers sponsoring providers are not required to make employer contributions.
