Red Kettle Christmas campaign Kicks off Friday

FLINT — The Salvation Army of Genesee County is inviting the community to join it for the kick off of the official start of the Christmas season at noon on Nov. 11 with a special ceremony followed by light refreshments and tours of their offices located in downtown Flint. The 2011 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign goal will be announced during the ceremony. The funds collected during the campaign will remain in the county to help sustain crucial services such as food and shelter assistance for local families this winter and throughout the coming year. Last year, almost $1,000,000 was used to help 2,300 Genesee County families through The Army’s emergency assistance programs. The majority of the funds were donated during the eight week Christmas campaign and were used to prevent 2,300 from losing their homes or having their utilities turned off, provided weekly supplemental foods to help fight hunger to hundreds of families, and helped more than 1,400 families celebrate the season by providing Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance. Through Dec. 24, bell ringers will collect donations at more than 60 red kettles located at retailers and businesses such as Kroger, Walmart, Genesee Valley Center, Sam’s Club, and Walgreens. There are a variety of ways for the community to help. For those who would like to give their time to help others in need, The Salvation Army has volunteer spots for bell ringers at the kettle locations it maintains in the area. This activity is ideal for service groups, families and individuals. Businesses and organizations can sponsor campaigns to collect new toys, coats and clothing for distribution through the Toy Shop.
