In brief

Cars, cyberspace to be discussed

FLINT – The Mid-Michigan Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) is hosting a Cybersecurity Panel, May 15, at 6 p.m. This event will be held at the Holiday Inn, 5353 Gateway Center, Flint, Michigan. A dinner will be served at 7 p.m. prior to the evening’s program.

The program will be a panel discussion on “Cybersecurity and the Automobile.” This promises to be an interesting and informative panel discussion on cybersecurity issues involving the automobile, personal, home, and infrastructure.

Of concern are the planned vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems and vehicle connections to external communications. While these systems promise to be great enablers for safety, they also open our cars to hacking of the vehicles internal communications.

How much would someone pay to know your location history, which could include health, financial, and personal information? Recent articles in the Wall Street Journal document instances of vehicle and credit card hacking. The information to be discussed should be of concern to everyone. Audience participation is encouraged.

Panelists include: Dr. Richard Enbody, Michigan State University; Justin Montalbano, Delphi Automotive; Dr. Andre’ Weimerskirch, Lear Corporation; and Mark Zachos, DG Technologies. The Panel Moderator will be Mark Pope, General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales. The dinner cost is $35 for SAE and Saginaw Valley Engineering Council members, $30 for retirees, $20 for students and $40 for non-members. This event is open to the public. There is no charge for the program only. However, reservations are required. Details: Call 810-635-7948 or email SAEMidMichSec@ – G.G.
