Baker College fall 2017 classes start a month early

FLINT TWP. — The start date for fall 2017 semester at Baker College is Aug. 28, about a month earlier than in previous years. The college has officially transitioned from a quarter system to semesters effective this fall. Enrollment is underway for all on-ground and online courses.

Baker College has day and evening classes for programs in the areas of applied technology, business, education, engineering, health science, information technology and social science.

The new academic calendar offers two 16-week semesters and a 12-week summer session, versus four quarters.

MCC’s Perry is MCCAA Athletic Director of Year

FLINT — Mott Community College (MCC) Athletic Director Al Perry has been named the 2017 Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Athletic Director of the Year. The award is presented yearly to an Athletic Director who has distinguished themselves among their peers. Perry was recognized for not just his contributions at Mott Community College, but for his contributions at the MCCAA level as well. He is the Vice President of the organization and the chair for both volleyball and baseball. He is also the Region XII Volleyball chairperson. Perry oversees an eight-sport program at Mott Community College in addition to Student Life operations. He is the second Mott Athletic Director to win the award. Flotilla offers fun in the sun on the Flint River

FLINT — Everyone is invited to sit back and relax on the fourth annual Flotilla down the Flint River. At the event individuals will bring floatation devices to enjoy a leisurely float down the river. The Flotilla will take place Aug. 5 and is a fundraiser for the Flint River Corridor Alliance (FRCA).

The Flotilla is an opportunity for everyone to see what a great asset the Flint River is for the community. The event had almost 250 participants in 2016. From inner tubes to rafts to kayaks, participants should bring a flotation device to the event. The cost to participate in the event is $10 per person, children under the age of 12 are free. A family rate for individuals in the same household is $30. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with registration starting at noon, online registration is available in advance at www.frcalliance.org or through the FRCA Facebook page. A free shuttle will transport participants to the registration and launch site at Tenacity Brewing located at 119 N. Grand Traverse St. in Flint.
