The first Saturday in May means only one thing to us horse racing fans! Yes, it’s Kentucky Derby time once again. The 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby will be Saturday at 6:34 p.m. Who will ever forget the drama and excitement of American Pharoah winning the Kentucky Derby last year and going on to win the Triple Crown. American Pharoah did what no other horse could do since Affirmed in 1978 winning the elusive Triple Crown. Is there a horse this year with Triple Crown potential? I would say, likely not.
Let’s look at this year’s field of horses and handicap this race. The favorite will be a horse named Nyquist. Yes, Detroit Red Wings fans, he is named after the Red Wings’ Gustav Nyquist. The owner, Paul Reddam, is a huge Detroit Red Wings fan. Pretty cool, I say!
The horse Nyquist comes into the Derby at a solid 7-0 racing record. Nyquist also has the highest earnings of any horse in the race at $3.2 million, which is impressive. Nyquist won the Florida Derby, which was a huge win. Nyquist is trained by Doug O’Neill. I believe Nyquist will go off as the Kentucky Derby favorite with odds around 3-1 or so. The second and third choice odds of 8-1 belong to Exaggerator and Mohayman. Exaggerator has already been defeated by Nyquist three times so be aware of that. Exaggerator’s biggest win was the Santa Anita Derby. Mohayman was beaten pretty handily in the Florida Derby by Nyquist. Mohayman comes in as the second largest money earner at $1.6 million. The bloodlines of Mohayman is solid with Secretariat and Seattle Slew ties.
The horse Gun Runner sits at 10-1 as the current fourth choice. The horse Destin is 14-1 and Danzing Candy is 25-1. The field has 20 horses so if you like long shot bombs there will be plenty of them at 50-1 or higher to choose from.
The Fat Guy was a solid 3-0 on American Pharoah last year, so if you paid attention you made some money! There is no Carpe Diem in this race, so the boys from Metamora will have more money in their pockets! Sorry, couldn’t resist pointing out how they ignored my selections last year! I know Kentucky Derby favorites don’t usually fare well at the Winner’s Circle. However, I have liked Nyquist for a while now and I think he gets it done! See you in the Winner’s Circle, Nyquist!
My next choice is Mohayman! I want to wish all of you much good luck wagering on the greatest two minutes of sports! Mint Juleps for everyone, I say!
Snooze fest on the hardwoods
The NBA Playoffs here have been so boring and noncompetitive. I think there were about two series worth watching and that was it. The two were the Toronto and Indiana series and the Charlotte and Miami series. The Miami series goes seven games and then Charlotte loses by 33 points! How can a team no show in a game seven? Charlotte, that was downright embarrassing.
The NHL Playoffs have been outstanding and entertaining. The game seven between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks was awesome to watch. I know most of us Red Wings fans shed no tears as the Blues eliminated the hated “Hawks.” How about Anaheim choking away another game seven at home? They are the new Washington Capitals when it comes to choking. Enough said on that topic!
More entertainment and strangeness
The NFL Draft was entertaining and yet strange, I thought. The mock drafts by all the experts were once again not even close. And, how about the dope smoker Mr. Tunsil cost himself $7 million by dropping in the draft. Whoever hacked his account 10 minutes before the draft cost him dearly. Will these athletes ever learn? Social media can be devastating to careers! He got high but was not picked high going No. 13 in the first round to Miami. Good going, Mr. Tunsil. Yet another example of what not to do in any professional career.
I thought that the Detroit Lions drafted pretty well overall but only time will tell.
Giddy up, everyone. May the best horse win. email@example.com
