GENEVA, Ill. — The Flint Jr. Generals had an absolutely stellar season, winning their division in record time by 26 points and cementing themselves as one of the top teams in the North American Tier III Hockey League. That run, however, came to a conclusion in Sunday’s Silver Cup Championship Game with a 3-0 loss to the North Iowa Bulls in Geneva, Ill.
Flint, a junior hockey team based at Flint’s Iceland Arena, plowed through the two initial series of the postseason before entering the round robin championship tournament this past weekend. The opening round resulted in Flint winning the best of three series 2-0 over the Metro Jets and locked up the East division postseason title with a 2-0 sweep of the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks.
The Jr. Gens began the round robin with a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Jr. Blues before taking down the Dallas Jr. Stars on Friday, 5-2. A Saturday night battle with North Iowa left Flint with a 7-3 defeat before the 3-0 shutout took place in the rematch the following day for the Silver Cup.
Although the team is based in Flint Township, there are no Flint Township natives on the roster. There is, however, a pair of players who suited up for the Flushing/Carman-Ainsworth co-op hockey team including forward Jordy Makranyi and forward Justin Fisher.
Also involved is former Flushing/ Carman-Ainsworth head coach Jon Jepson as well as current Raiders’ coach Ben Guzak. Both are assistants under head coach Steve Howard.
Makranyi played 25 games for Flint this season with two goals, three assists and a plus-seven rating. Fisher played in 48 contests and accumulated 14 goals and 36 helpers with a plus-30 rating.
