— The Flint Junior Generals had to go overtime in both their games last weekend, but were rewarded with two victories over the Mountain Cats in North American 3 Hockey League play. Flint won Saturday’s contest at home, 3-2, and took Sunday’s rematch in Farmington Hills, 4-3.
Nathan Scurfield scored just 14 seconds into OT to win Saturday’s game at Iceland Arena. Shane Johnston and Swartz Creek’s Andrew Lay assisted on the goal.
Flint led twice in the game and outshot Farmington, 54-24. Mathew Jensen’s first-period goal at 9:25 on an assist from Michael Sisk gave the Junior Generals a 1-0 lead. The Mountain Cats tied it 28 seconds into the second period, but Lay put Flint back in front, 2-1, on a goal at 8:35 assisted by Scurfield and Stephen Hibbard. Farmington tied it again on a powerplay goal at 10:41, and the third period was scoreless. Dominic Orlando had 22 saves.
Sunday’s game seesawed back and forth before Caleb O’Brien scored on a penalty shot at 3:52 of overtime to give Flint the sweep. The Generals led, 1-0, on Tyler Kennedy’s first-period goal at 5:25, assisted by Warren Carter and Nathan Szalacinski. The Mountain Cats tied it less than seven minutes later and took a 2-1 lead with the only goal of the second period.
Flint moved back in front, 3-2, on goals by Kennedy and Carter early in the third. Kennedy connected at 3:16 on assists from O’Brien and Hibbard, and Carter scored at 5:06 on a pass from Lay. Farmington sent it into OT with a goal at 13:23.
The Generals again outshot the Cats, 47-35, with Orlando making 32 saves.
Flint has won three straight games and five of its last seven to improve to 11-13-1. The Generals will travel to Peoria this weekend for games Saturday at 6:45 p.m. and Sunday at 1:15.
