FLINT — Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint continues to fill the need of specialty cancer treatment services by welcoming Rabbie Hanna, MD to their surgical oncology team. Dr. Hanna is a board-certified gynecologic oncologist who specializes in the removal of cancerous tumors located within or near the female reproductive organs, in addition to the management of such cancers with chemotherapy.

With the addition of Dr. Hanna, Genesee County and surrounding area women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers now have a specialized surgical option closer to home.

“I am excited to join the surgical oncology team in Flint and bring a specialized treatment to the area,” Hanna. “We’re eliminating the need to travel for gynecologic oncology services – since the service is now closer to home, patients may receive care quicker, as well as receive additional treatments and follow-up care offered right here in Flint.”

Hanna is a recognized leader in his field, who comes to Karmanos by way of the Detroit metropolitan area. He has been named to the Hour Detroit Top Doctors List every year since 2014, including receiving the most votes from his medical colleagues in 2020.

“When it comes to gynecologic oncology, I utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as robotic surgery,” said Hanna. “These types of procedures allow me to make smaller incisions resulting in faster recovery times for patients, rather than with traditional surgery techniques. The decision on which technique works best will be discussed among the patient’s cancer care team of physicians and with the patient.”

Hanna removes cervical, ovarian, vulvar, vaginal and uterine cancers through surgery. He will work closely with the radiation oncologists on the McLaren Flint campus to provide the best treatment plan for each patient’s success.

“We are dedicated to offering cancer patients the best treatments for their care,” said Chris Boyce, Central Region and McLaren Northern Michigan Director of Cancer Services for Karmanos Cancer Network. “The addition of Dr. Hanna to our team of oncologists in Flint helps us fill a void for this specialized cancer treatment. His expertise and training will help in creating more patient success stories in our communities.”

Hanna has an extensive educational background in gynecologic oncology. He completed his gynecologic oncology fellowship training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Chapel Hill, NC) in 2011. In 2008, Dr. Hanna completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency at Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center. He completed postgraduate training at The University Teaching Hospital of Al-Nahrain College of Medicine in Baghdad, Iraq, where he also received his medical degree.
