BURTON — The Burton Kiwanis will hold its annual Hot Fudge Run & Walk as a virtual event this year due to the COVID-19 crisis, taking place from Feb. 20-26.

According to the Kiwanis’ Hot Fudge Run & Walk website the organization has worked to make the best decision possible about this year’s event, which is the kickoff of the Burton Race Series.

Despite having the approval of the Bentley Board of Education to use school property to hold a “live” socially distanced event, the City of Burton, erring on the side of caution, instead urged a virtual event.

After consulting with sponsors of the event, the Burton Kiwanis decided not to cancel the annual run/walk, but to instead hold it virtually. According to the website, sponsors currently include Karen’s Carpet, Genesee Ceramic Tile, Crystal Fieldhouse, Captain’s Quarters, Family Care Plus Physical Therapy, Dairy Queen, Tina Conley, Vaughn Smith, Amber Shaw Re/Max Eclipse and Batteries Plus.

Participants can run or walk their 5K race anytime between Feb. 20-26. Registered participants will receive an email from Athlinks with details on how to post their results online. The 5K walk or run can take place anywhere.

The fee is $15 registration without a shirt. Registration closes on Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Packet pick up and on-site registration is available on Feb. 19, from noon-5 p.m. at Complete Runner, 915 Dort Hwy., in Flint.

Online results will be available through Athlinks. Participants will receive an email prior to Feb. 20, with details describing how you can easily submit your finish time for posting in the results. If running or walking outdoors, race organizers recommend using a fitness tracker or app to record your distance and time accurately. Indoors, a treadmill display, fitness tracker, or Zwift are fine.

Those wishing to participate in the Burton Race Series only need to complete three of the four events and receive a custom Burton Race Series medal. Medals will be available for pick-up at the Veterans Honor Run or Complete Runner in Flint. The four events in the series are: Burton Kiwanis Hot Fudge 5K Run & Walk, Race2Grace, City of Burton Memorial Day 5K Run/Walk and the Veterans Honor Run

The first 200 participants will receive a custom designed race logo participant medal, a custom designed race number and a 2oz. jar of Dairy Queen Fudge. Visit the website for details on shirts.
