GENESEE COUNTY — In honor of past African American leaders, Kroger’s is sponsoring its 8th annual “I Can Make History” contest to encourage cultural and community pride. Kroger will award more than $71,000 in prizes in four categories – ART, ESSAY, MUSIC, and POETRY. The competition is open to all 4th through 12th grade students currently enrolled in school in the state of Michigan.

Size, length and content guidelines for each category entry are also provided as well as release forms.
Entries must address one of two themes:
•About any African American past or present and why you want to be like that person.
• How are you making history in your community/neighborhood?
All entries must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015.
Winners will be notified by March 27 and will receive their prize at Kroger’s “I Can Make History” awards dinner on Saturday, April 18.
Prizes include one $2000 scholarship awarded to all first place winners in grades 11 and 12; one $500 scholarship to all second place winners in grades 11 and 12; one electronic tablet awarded to all first place winners in grades 4-10; one eReader to all second place winners in grades 4-10; and one $3000 Best of Show Scholarship Award to the entry, among all categories, receiving the highest score from the judges.
Kroger also will award a $5,000 School Leadership Award to the school with the most winning entries.
