Lapeer woman charged over incident at Target

FLINT TWP.
— Jessica Hempton, a 26-year-old Lapeer woman, was arraigned Oct. 27 at the Genesee County Jail on charges of False Report of a Child Abduction, False Report of a Felony and Retail Fraud — First Degree stemming from an Oct. 24 retail fraud at the Target store, 3515 Miller Rd.

Sgt. James Baldwin said Flint Township Police responded to Target at 8:40 p.m. Oct. 24 for a retail fraud complaint. Upon being apprehended by store employees, Hempton stated that her four-yearold daughter, Morgan Salem, had been abducted by a male who “ordered her to steal a television in exchange for the return of her daughter.”

An Amber Alert was issued for the kidnapping of her daughter. “At the time, the suspect could not verify her daughter’s location,” Baldwin said.

Later, however, it was later determined that Hempton had lied about the abduction, along with her own identity and that her daughter had not been kidnapped. Her daughter was found to be safe and in the care of her guardian said Baldwin. The Amber Alert was immediately canceled.
