Former Michigan State University and NBA player Mateen Cleaves was the keynote speaker last Wednesday at Genesys Athletic Club/Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame’s Leadership Mentoring Program in Grand Blanc. The club hosted some 220 student-athletes representing 24 local high schools in a morning-long program designed to help student-athletes improve their leadership skills as an athlete, in the classroom and as a future community leader. Carman-Ainsworth volleyball coach Barb Hurand and Beecher boys’ basketball coach Mike Williams also spoke about leadership through social media and factors that make a leader. Also conducting mentoring talks were Lapeer varsity football coach Mike Smith, Mott Community College basketball coach Steve Schmidt, former Powers Catholic girls’ basketball coach Kathy McGee and former Southwestern High and Central Michigan University multi-sport athlete Keith Richardson. The student-athletes later took part in speed, agility, power and endurance drills conducted by Genesys Athletic Club trainers. High schools represented were Atherton, Beecher, Bendle, Bentley, Carman-Ainsworth, Clio, Davison, Fenton, Southwestern, Flushing, Genesee, Goodrich, Grand Blanc, Holly, Hamady, Kearsley, Lake Fenton, Lapeer, Linden, Montrose, Mt. Morris, Northwestern, Powers Catholic and Swartz Creek.
