Letter writer disrespects young activists

In response to “Grand Blanc Schools and Grand Blanc Police Department Show Public Support for BLM” by David Rowe, Grand Blanc. I happened to be driving through the area and witnessed the Black Lives Matter march on Saginaw Street. I applaud the coming together of above parties and activists! It presented a beautiful message that we are all in this world to live together and change is possible.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death, peaceful protests were held in numerous cities and towns, including my city of Davison. Black, white, young, and old came together to protest racism and police violence. This is controversial to Mr. Rowe, really?

Mr. Rowe disrespects young activists speaking, yes, “their truth.” He gives a much-maligned perspective of BLM and Critical Race Theory. Critical Race Theory is a concept that seeks to understand inequality and racism in the United States. America still struggles with this problem plaguing us much like the pandemic.

As for the Proud Boys that Mr. Rowe seems to be inviting to town, they are described by Wikipedia as a far right, neo fascist, chauvinist, exclusively male organization. They have been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Several their members have been charged in federal court with offences related to the January 6 riot at the Capitol which resulted in five deaths.

Stop the overheated rhetoric. Recognize the pain of the past, value diversity, work for equality of justice. We need to speak the truth about the history of racism in America and its existence today and aspire to do better. — Terri Cross, Davison
