Lions roar at home!

Fat Guy Corner

The Detroit Lions put the Motor City smackdown on the hated Green Bay Packers Sunday at Ford Field. The final score was 19-7. It was not a pretty football game, as the offense didn’t play very well and Matthew Stafford was anything but razor sharp. Mr. Stafford threw two interceptions and had a possible game-changing fumble that luckily didn’t end up costing the Lions the game.

It was a terrible flashback to the end of the 2013 season for me. I flat-out did not like what Stafford was doing. I will tell you this, if he plays like that the rest of the season it will be a long one here in Detroit. I realize one game doesn’t make a season but I also know old habits die hard.

The loss of Stephen Tulloch for the rest of the year is a crippling blow to the Lions’ defense. Tulloch tore his ACL while celebrating a defensive play and man that sure does stink as he was the Lions’ best defender against the run. The bottom line is Detroit got the “W” and is 2-1 on the season and tied with the Chicago Bears for the division lead. The Lions will hit the highway on Sunday and play the New York Jets. I actually like the Lions to win this game. The defense should pressure the Jets quarterback Geno Smith into multiple turnovers. Crystal Cheeseball prediction: Here us Roar 31 and Grounded Planes 24.

Sparty rolls, Wolverines fold

The Michigan State Spartans demolished Eastern Michigan; no surprise there. They will take on Wyoming this Saturday in East Lansing. The Spartans will roll the Wyoming Cowboys come Saturday. The Cheeseball says: Sparty 51 and Wyoming 13. The Michigan Wolverines are another story as they lost to Utah and in embarrassing fashion at the Big House. The “Fire Brady Hoke” hot seat situation is at an all-time high, at least to Michigan fans. He is for sure not the right guy to lead Michigan into the future. This team is a joke on the football field and Wolverines’ fans are getting sick and tired of it. The attendance is starting to dwindle at the Big House and that should be a huge concern to athletic director Dave Brandon. Michigan football in my lifetime is at an all-time low and the rest of the season doesn’t look much brighter. Hoke the Bad Joke Must Go! Michigan opens up the Big Ten season with the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday at home. Cheeseball says: Michigan 24 and Minnesota 20.

Over and done

The Major League Baseball season is over with on Sunday. The Detroit Tigers are currently one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals for the American League Central Division title. Detroit and Kansas City have six games left each. Detroit has the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins left and Kansas City closes out with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox. The question is, will the Detroit Tigers collapse in the last week of the season? I have to say the odds are about 50-50 as I have zero faith in this team. I want to believe in them, but then they just lay so many darned eggs on the field.

Let’s be totally honest, too, the Tigers’ bullpen is one scary deal. How about this scenario: Joe Nathan needs to close out a game on Sunday for the Tigers to advance to October playoff baseball? I wouldn’t count on it one bit. Another honest statement from me: If the Tigers do play in October, how much faith do you have in the Tigers’ closers getting the job done? I want to believe in this team, but they have made it so hard all season long. Detroit should have had this division wrapped up two weeks ago. Maybe, just maybe, they can put it all together and bring home the World Series to Mr. Pizza Pizza! I know he wants a World Series championship here in Detroit so bad. He has spent the money and made some moves, so it’s time for the players to produce between the chalk! I pray next week’s article is a positive one and not a negative one concerning our Detroit Tigers.
