Lions win under new coach, but can they keep it up?

Fat Guy Corner

The excitement of “The Game” between Michigan and Ohio State should be running rampant this week. However, the Wolverines have numerous injuries and COVID issues inside the football program. The game has been cancelled for Saturday. This will be the first time since 1917 the Buckeyes and Wolverines will not face each other. The game will not be made up either. The Wolverines, I doubt, are unhappy the game is not being played at all. The Jim Harbaugh team was going to receive a serious football whipping on the field as they were four touchdown underdogs. Yes, the Wolverines were four touchdown underdogs. I can seriously state in all my years following this rivalry I don’t remember Michigan or Ohio State ever being four touchdown underdogs. The Jim Harbaugh contract situation will be the next major hurdle inside the Michigan football program. I wonder if the Big Ten will now let Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game? The teams needed six games to qualify and the Buckeyes only played five? Stay Tuned.

The Detroit Lions pulled off a miracle win in Chicago under new head coach Darrell Bevell. The Lions trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter rallied late to win the football game 34-30. I will admit, the fact that the Lions won a football game without “Pencil Head” on the sidelines looking befuddled warmed my heart. What I saw from the Lions on Sunday was grown men playing football like it was fun. Those on the sidelines were jumping around like little kids. The players were jumping around on the field enjoying themselves and it was noticeable to me. I think the Lions football team is relived that Matt Patricia has been fired and a new regime is coming in soon. I mean, Matt Stafford threw for 402 yards and three touchdowns. He looked real good to me.

The shocker was the Lions offensive line blocked well all game long, which I had not seen in a long time. What cannot be over looked is the job Darrell Bevell did preparing this team and getting the Lions to not fold up the season. I know Bevell looks at it as a chance to prove what he can do as a head coach to the Lions and the rest of the NFL. Is it possible that Bevell gets the Lions head coaching job? It’s possible but highly unlikely I would think. The Lions schedule has four games left and it’s a buzz saw. The Packers this Sunday at Ford Field. The next three are at Tennessee, Tampa Bay at home and Minnesota at home.

I am so curious to see how the Lions play the Packers this Sunday. The Packers are one of the best teams in the NFC and just might go to the Super Bowl. The play of quarterback Aaron Rodgers this season has been outstanding for the Packers. Aaron has carved up just about everyone this season passing the football.

The Lions can make a nice statement with a good showing on Sunday against Green Bay. Can the Lions win back to back football games? We will see on Sunday as kick off is set for 4:25 at Ford Field. The Fat Guy prediction: Rodgers and Company 35 and Motor City Kitties 27.

The college basketball season is bouncing along quite well at Michigan and Michigan State. The Wolverines and Spartans are both undefeated so far. The Wolverines had their game this week cancelled against N.C. State because of issues at N.C. State. The Wolverines open up the Big Ten season on Sunday at home against Penn State. The Spartans impressive victory over Duke last week showed me the Spartans are National title contenders once again. The Spartans’ next game is Sunday against Oakland University. The Spartans open Big Ten play on Dec. 20 at Northwestern.
