CLAYTON TOWNSHIP — On April 21, Lora Phelps placed a sign saying, “Honk for Me, I’m Turning 3,” in front of her family’s Morrish Road home for her daughter’s birthday the following day.

The response, Phelps said, was overwhelming

“I don’t even know where to begin to thank the community,” said Phelps. “Ellis had the best day ever!

“From literally hundreds of people honking, to gifts and cards being dropped off from strangers, to balloons and more signs being added by passersby, to friends and family calling, bringing her gifts, and Face Timing to sing ‘Happy Birthday,’ we cannot thank everyone enough.”

To top it all off, the Phelpses requested the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office wish Ellis a happy birthday. Not only did the sheriff’s department respond, but the Clayton Township Police Department and Swartz Creek Area Firefighters Inc. joined in with a surprise birthday parade.

“I wish we could properly thank, and hug, the strangers, friends and family who made Ellis’ day so special,” Phelps said. “We love and appreciate you all.” — L.R.
