FLUSHING — Flushing community members can help fund the Flushing Area Library by participating in a donation drive over the next two weeks.
As of Monday, the Farmers Insurance LeeAlan Weddel Agency in Flushing has been collecting donations to support the Flushing Area Library. Businesses and individuals can deliver donations to the Farmers Insurance office at 214 E. Main Street or donate via PayPal or Venmo until Oct. 5.
LeeAlan Weddel, owner of the Farmers Insurance LeeAlan Weddel Agency, said that the fundraiser will provide a portion of the proceeds that the Flushing Area Library usually receives from the Fall Book Sale, which was cancelled this year due to COVID-19 concerns. Friends of the Flushing Library hosts the Fall Book Sale every October to raise funds for the local library.
“Many people rely on the Flushing Area Library, the services they provide and the events they put together,” Weddel said. “While we understand the need to cancel the event this year, we don’t want the library to miss out on the funds that would have been raised through the event.”
The donation drive also coincides with National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week (Sept. 20-26), a nationwide campaign that promotes basic education programs and access to books for 36 million U.S. adults with low literacy skills.
At the end of the drive, the LeeAlan Agency office will match all donations received up to $1,000 and present the total gift to the Flushing Area Library on behalf of Friends of the Flushing Area Library.
