Super Bowl 50 is locked in! The Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos will hook up on Feb. 7 in Santa Clara at Levi Stadium at 6:35 p.m.
The two teams reached the Super Bowl by two very different methods. Carolina won a blowout game 49-15 over the Arizona Cardinals and the Denver Broncos won a hard-fought old fashioned defensive battle over the New England Patriots 20-18. I can assure you this, Tom Brady of the Patriots has not seen that kind of defensive pressure, ever. Tom was hit an astounding 23 times in this football game. He also had zero time to throw the football.
When one realizes that Tom Brady has one of the quickest releases in football, that is how dominant the Denver defense was. Von Miller and Demarcus Ware wreaked havoc all game long. I also have to give credit to Wade Phillips, the Denver defensive coordinator. Wade decided to rush three men and drop eight into coverage and it frustrated Brady. I have never seen him so frustrated.
I also think New England’s offensive line issues came to the forefront in this football game. The Patriots made it all year long on a patchwork O-Line. I think the fact the Patriots cannot stretch the field at the receiver position is an offseason issue that needs to be addressed. I know many do not feel sorry for the Patriots, and neither do I.
Peyton Manning will have numerous fans wanting the old man to win this Super Bowl. How about a Peyton Manning ride off into the sunset with a Super Bowl victory? It makes for a nice story, one must admit. Will the Fat Guy pick the Denver Broncos to win it all?
The Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton ripped apart the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals’ Carson Palmer was the story of this football game. Carson proved to be a choke artist in the playoffs. He threw horrible interceptions! He had a couple of key fumbles for turnovers, too. The Cardinals’ punt returner coughed up a critical fumble on top of that. It was a true comedy of errors and a threehour horror show. One would swear it was the Detroit Lions wearing Cardinals uniforms if they didn’t know any better.
The Panthers’ Cam Newton showed why he is the NFL’s MVP this season. He was tossing touchdowns with ease. He was running the football with ease. The Panther defense dominated its side of the ball. It was a picture perfect game for Carolina.
The shame for all of us football fans is that we wanted to see a good game. What we got was a blowout and many fans turning off their televisions. The old joke applied here: How many Arizona Cardinals does it take to change a flat tire? The answer? Just one, unless it’s a blowout, then the whole team shows up!
I can only imagine the buzz kill for all Arizona Cardinals fans. Will the Fat Guy choose the Carolina Panthers to win the Super Bowl? I guess next week everyone will find out the winners! One more thing, though, my Super Bowl predictions are really good and I don’t have to worry about Pete Carroll making a dumb play call this year! Yes, I am still bitter over it!
Winged wheels on break
The NHL hockey All-Star break is here. The only Red Wing participant is Dylan Larkin. The Red Wings have had a good first half of the hockey season and are at 58 points with a solid 25-16-8 record. The Winged Wheels went 7-1 on the road in January, which was important. The Eastern Conference is very tight and will continue to be tight all the way to the end of the season. A bad 10-day stretch and a team can find itself struggling to make the playoffs. I think Petr Mrazek has solidified the No. 1 goaltender spot and I like it. This guy is so solid between the pipes!
The Super Bowl winner and breakdown next week… Sorry, you’ll all just have to wait. email@example.com
