Lump of coal for Lions’ coaches

Fat Guy Corner

The holiday season has forced early newspaper deadlines for the next two weeks. I sit here at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning drinking a coffee having a very peaceful morning.

Last Tuesday, late afternoon, was not so peaceful. I was driving down the road when news broke that Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn were being retained for the 2020 season. Yes, another losing year is on the horizon for all of us Lions fans. The fearless version of “Patriots 2” has gone a solid 9-20-1 over the last two years! I might add it will be 9-22-1 after these next two losses in 2019 to Denver and Green Bay.

The disgust and profanity-laced tirade I exhibited in my vehicle was for adult ears only! It’s so clear that these two clowns are clueless as a duo. The hiring of Patricia is regrettable and was a huge misfire. Have you ever listened to him after a game at the press conference? The Matt Patricia press conferences make me cringe every week and yes, I watch every single one of them!

I bet most of you didn’t know Martha “The sun is in my eyes where’s my glasses?” and her daughter, Sheila Ford Hamp sent out a letter from the Detroit Lions. The letter had some interesting things to say and the letter is pure guilt on keeping the two clowns. The first point is that the Lions were competitive and came up a few plays short of getting victories. Hey, Martha, that is seven decades of news, not just the 2019 season. The letter states injuries as a factor of the Lions’ dismal performance in 2019. Hey, Martha and Sheila, the Pittsburgh Steelers are 8-6 and played with the second- and third-string quarterback most all season. The Lions expect to be a playoff contender in 2020 and Lions’ fans deserve a winning team! Oh, you think they deserve a winning team? The loyal Lions’ fan base has deserved one for decades the way they support this football team every Sunday!

The letter made me chuckle, and yet, in the end, made me madder than a hornet at the same time. The Same Old Lions tag will stick for another two or three decades, if you ask me. The leadership of the Lions has been an issue ever since I started watching these bums! Happy Holidays to Quinn and Patricia, who get another year of paychecks, which is like embezzling if you ask me! The Lions’ Super Bowl is once again the NFL Draft of 2020. Go Lions. SNORE.

Fire up chips, fizzled

Central Michigan’s football team was routed by San Diego State on Saturday. The SDSU defense just dominated resulting in a 48-11 loss. The turn around by CMU this season was a tremendous story and the future looks good in Mt. Pleasant.

The Quick Lane Bowl is December 26 at Ford Field and Eastern Michigan will try to take down the Pitt Panthers. The boys in Vegas have installed Pitt as 11-point favorites to defeat EMU. The prediction: Pittsburgh Panthers 31 and Eastern Michigan 24.

The Michigan State Spartans and Wake Forrest play in the Pinstripe Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27 at 3:20 p.m. The Spartans will face a weak defensive team in Wake Forrest, which allows almost 30 points a game. The Spartans’ offense has been dismal all season long, but should find success in this football game. I can see MSU moving the ball offensively (did I just say that) and the defense stopping the Wake offense just enough. The prediction: MSU Above .500 in 2019, 27 and No Wake Zone 20.

The First Responder Bowl has Western Michigan and Western on December 30 at 12:30 pm. The Western Michigan offense is lights out and can score points. The Western Kentucky defense is pretty solid allowing only 20 points a game. I like the boys from Kalamazoo is a close football game. The prediction: Western in Brown 31 and Western in Red 27.

The NFL picking is over, thank goodness! An awful year for me. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
