MCC announces procedure for filling Board of Trustees vacancy

FLINT — Even as the Mott Community College community mourns the death of Trustee Celia Turner, the law requires that immediate action be taken to fill her position on the MCC Board of Trustees.

“It is hard for us to turn our attention to this only days after losing Trustee Turner,” said Michael Simon, who handles Board operations at MCC, “but the law is clear. The vacancy has to be announced and be filled by the Board within 30 days.”

According to state law, a community college Board of Trustees vacancy shall be filled through appointment by the majority of the Board with a legally qualified voter in the college district who shall serve until the next regular Board election, at which time the vacancy shall be filled by election for the remainder of the term. Because the filing deadline for this year’s trustee election has passed, the person appointed to fill Trustee Turner’s position will serve until 2013.

As required, Board Chair Lenore Croudy publicly announced the vacancy at the scheduled Board meeting Feb. 28, giving the MCC Board one month to fill the vacancy.

A legally qualified voter in the college district would be a registered voter residing within the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD). The GISD is roughly Genesee County but, due to the borders of the 21 individual school districts within the GISD, a few small portions of Genesee County are outside the GISD while portions are Oakland, Livingston, Saginaw and Lapeer counties are within the district. A full list of those 21 school districts follows.

Interested applicants should take the following steps: submit a letter, signed by the applicant, to the Board Chairperson by March 10 indicating a desire to be considered for appointment to the Board; include a personal resume, and provide evidence of eligibility.

The Board is not restricted to consideration of those submitting an application in filling such a vacancy.

Area school districts within the GISD boundary are Atherton, Beecher, Bendle, Bentley, Carman-Ainsworth, Clio, Davison, Fenton, Flint, Flushing, Genesee, Goodrich, Grand Blanc, Kearsely, Lake Fenton, Lakeville, Linden, Montrose, Mt. Morris, Swartz Creek and Westwood Heights. — Natalie Blythe
