MCC partners with VAAA on free dental care for seniors

FLINT — Mott Community College (MCC) Dental Hygiene Clinic is again partnering with the Valley Area Agency for the Aging (VAAA) to provide free dental cleanings and check-ups for area senior citizens as part of the 226 DDF Brighter Futures Community Grant through the Delta Dental Foundation.

VAAA received the $1,500 grant which will be used to cover the costs of cleaning and check-ups for senior patients who schedule their cleanings with the MCC Dental Hygiene Clinic. The Dental Hygiene Clinic, located on the second floor of the Mott Memorial Building, offers low cost services rendered by Dental Hygiene Students under the supervision of licensed Dentists and Dental Hygienists.

“The MCC partnership with the VAAA to give senior citizens access to free dental cleanings and check-ups is a win-win,” said Tara Spencer, Coordinator of the Dental Hygiene program at MCC. “Our students benefit from the hands-on experience of working directly with senior-aged patients, and the seniors receive important dental health care.”

Seniors who qualify for the Comprehensive Dental Hygiene Care through VAAA will be provided this care free of charge. Care includes an extra and intra-oral exam, cleaning and polishing, periodontal debridement, fluoride treatment, nutritional assessment, periodontal evaluation, patient education, and dental charting.

“We are proud to recognize the work being done by MCC’s Dental Hygiene program and the VAAA by selecting this program as one of our grant recipients,” said Teri Battaglieri, Delta Dental Foundation Director. “By increasing access to dental care, we can help improve the oral and overall health and well-being of children and adults by preventing serious health issues down the road,” she said.

The MCC Dental Hygiene clinic offers state-of-the-art equipment including hightech digital radiography, computerized charting, and intra-oral cameras.

Funding through the Brighter Futures Community Grant is available for up to 120 patients, 60 for residents of Genesee County and 60 for residents of the City of Flint.
